| "ORPHANAGE" "Orphanage" is a word that conjures all varieties of mental pictures. Perhaps it brings to mind the heart-wrenching scenes of orphanages around the world you may have seen on television or in the paper. Or maybe you remember the heart-warming camaraderie of the orphaned children in Annie. So how about one more mental picture? Picture an orphanage that is not an institution but a community of homes where children do not live in dense mobs but in families. Then imagine these children being raised not only to survive but to thrive, becoming leaders in their community, their nation, the world and the Body of Christ. This was the vision God put in our hearts as He brought this project to the surface in our discussions. | VOCATIONAL
TRAINING PROGRAMS Serving with FVA, we support a variety of associations and vocational training programs specifically targeted at poor women and children. In one of these programs, young women learn valuable business and tailoring skills. Due to the death of their parents in the genocide or as the result of AIDS, many program participants began heading their households at a very early age (some as young as 8 years old). The skills they acquire in these training programs help women provide for themselves and their families in a healthy and sustainable way. Through the generous gifts of our supporters, New Mercies Ministries has been able to provide supplies and small loans to help these women get trained, started in business and support their families. We also work with a broad spectrum of community associations. These associations cooperate and support one another in business, vocational training and daily life. One women's association has even been highlighted by government officials as a model for reconciliation. Its membership is comprised of ex-convicts (many genocide offenders), genocide survivors and widows (many as the result of the genocide). Participants cite their faith in Jesus Christ as playing the foundational role in their desire and ability to work together in this cooperative community. |
| "For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation (Romans 5:10-11). " |
Through | Having common vision, and desiring to more intentionally and effectively share ideas and resources, FVA and New Mercies Ministries have teamed up! As part of this partnership, FVA has the primary role in local project administration and serves as the focal point in Rwanda. A New Mercies Ministries representative serves in an Advisory Role on the FVA Board of Trustees to have a voice in matters related to projects on which we partner. Together, we are working to pursue funding and project support. We believe that cooperation and equal-level partnership are paramount to the success of individual projects and the ministry as a whole. New Mercies Ministries is called to start projects with (not for) national partners so that both they and the community have ownership of the project throughout its lifecycle. We are happy to join FVA in this way and look forward in faith, anticipating how God will love the people of Rwanda through us as we work together. |
| Known as the "Land of A Thousand Hills," Rwanda is a beautiful country situated just east of the Democratic Republic of Congo in Central Africa. Sadly, Rwanda is better known for the brutal 1994 genocide that occurred within its borders than for its beauty. In just 100 days, between 800,000 and 1 million men, women and children were brutally murdered (that's an average of 8-10 thousand people killed daily in a country slightly smaller than Maryland). In spite of this, Rwanda is being transformed as God acts out of His character to bring restoration to this broken, humbled nation. Read on to learn more about Rwanda and the ways God has allowed us to be a part of what He is doing there! |
